THE Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has condemned the reported order of a Federal High Court in Lokoja directing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to deregister the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), describing it as a setback for democracy.
The party said the reported court order further constricted Nigeria’s democratic space and undermined multiparty democracy ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a statement issued on Friday by its Interim National Publicity Secretary, Comrade Ini Ememobong, the PDP said it was awaiting the Certified True Copy of the judgment.
The party, however, expressed concern over the implications of the reported order, noting that many Nigerians had already invested resources to contest elective offices on the platform of the NDC.
According to the PDP, the order amounts to an economic loss for aspirants and supporters who committed resources to the party’s activities.
The party alleged that the development aligned with what it described as efforts by the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 elections.
It claimed the reported court order reflected a lack of commitment to fair political competition and urged the Federal Government to take steps to lower political tensions in the interest of peace, stability and democratic governance.
The PDP also urged the leadership of the NDC to challenge the order through the appellate courts and mobilise public support in defence of democratic consolidation.
The statement was signed by Ememobong, National Publicity Secretary of the PDP’s Interim National Working Committee.
