The Oyo State House of Assembly has cancelled activities planned to mark its third anniversary, citing rising security concerns in parts of the Oke-Ogun and Ogbomoso zones.
The 10th Assembly, inaugurated on June 14, 2023, had initially scheduled public engagements and celebratory events to commemorate the milestone.
However, Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin announced the decision at Thursday’s plenary, explaining that lawmakers opted to forgo celebrations in response to recent security challenges and in solidarity with affected communities.
He added that the Assembly considered it inappropriate to proceed with festivities at a time when residents in parts of the state were grappling with insecurity, noting that members instead resolved to focus on governance and legislative duties.
According to him, while the anniversary would ordinarily have been marked with celebrations and public engagement, the legislature shifted its attention to addressing pressing state issues, particularly security.
Speaking on the Assembly’s achievements over the past three years, Ogundoyin disclosed that 36 bills were passed into law, covering key sectors of governance and development.
He added that 276 resolutions were adopted and transmitted to the executive and relevant agencies for implementation, with oversight committees monitoring compliance.
The Speaker also noted that the legislature convened a security summit to address recurring security concerns, conducted nine public hearings, and established a Post-Legislative Scrutiny Unit to assess the implementation of key laws, including the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Law (2019) and the Oyo State Security Agency Law (2020).
Reaffirming the Assembly’s commitment to accountability and people-oriented governance, Ogundoyin said lawmakers would continue to prioritize policies that promote peace, security, and socio-economic development.
“The Assembly remains focused on delivering democratic dividends and supporting policies that promote peace, security, and socio-economic development in Oyo State,” he said, adding that collaboration with the executive and security agencies would be sustained to address security challenges.
