Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has commissioned 10 newly completed intra-city road projects in Makurdi, Benue State, and a Community ICT Training Centre in Vandeikya Local Government Area, as part of efforts aimed at improving infrastructure, digital inclusion and economic empowerment.
The road projects, covering approximately 11.5 kilometres, were executed under the Phase I Urban Renewal Programme of the Benue State Government led by Governor Hyacinth Alia.
Speaking during the commissioning ceremony in Makurdi, the First Lady said the projects reflected the practical implementation of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda through investments that directly improve the lives of citizens.
She commended Governor Alia for what she described as his visionary leadership and commitment to delivering democratic dividends to the people of the state.
According to her, the newly completed roads, including the Shire Bakut Road dual carriageway and several connecting routes across Makurdi, would improve mobility, strengthen security and stimulate economic growth.
“These roads are pathways to economic growth,” she said. “They will improve mobility, enhance security, and provide a better quality of life for the people of Makurdi and beyond.”
She urged residents to support government efforts and take ownership of the infrastructure by ensuring its proper use and maintenance.
Earlier, Governor Alia said the projects would improve accessibility, reduce travel time and enhance connectivity among communities within Makurdi.
Following the road commissioning, the First Lady proceeded to Ihugh in Vandeikya Local Government Area, where she commissioned and handed over a Community ICT Training Centre established through a partnership between the National Information Technology Development Agency and the Renewed Hope Initiative.
Addressing residents, Tinubu said the facility was designed to accelerate economic diversification through industrialisation and digitalisation while equipping women and young people with digital skills.
“The knowledge of ICT serves as a significant tool for empowering communities, especially women, enabling them to break traditional barriers and access new opportunities,” she said.
She encouraged members of the community to take ownership of the centre and maximise its resources to improve educational and economic opportunities.
The facility was named the Lucy Zaiyol Alluor Community ICT Centre in honour of a distinguished educationist and former school principal in Benue State.
The Benue facility becomes the fourth ICT centre commissioned under the NITDA-RHI collaboration, following similar centres established in Bauchi, Kwara and Oyo states.
