Former Ogun Central senator, Iyabo Obasanjo, has announced her resignation from the All Progressives Congress, APC, citing irregularities as reason for her decision.
Iyabo, daughter of former head of state and president of Nigeria, Olusegun Obasanjo, conveyed her resignation in a letter, informed that cases of persistent disrespect, rejection, and unfair treatment by the party’s leadership in the party are reasons for her withdrawal of service, a development which comes after she contested for the party’s governorship ticket but was sidelined in a consensus process that produced Senator Adeola Solomon, popularly known as YAYI, as the APC’s candidate ahead of the 2027 election.
In the announcement made on Monday, she said, ” I agreed to support whichever candidate emerged through a consensus process, but I was not consulted before Senator Adeola was presented as the consensus candidate.
“Some of my supporters were denied access to the venue and intimidated. Nevertheless, I accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity.”
Following Adeola’s emergence, Obasanjo said he requested a meeting with her supporters, during which three requests were presented.
“During that meeting, three requests were made, and he promised to respond within one week. More than two months later, no response has been received,” she stated, describing the silence as part of a broader pattern of disregard.
“The treatment I have received since then has reflected a consistent pattern of rejection and disrespect. When disrespect is the only dish served, then one should leave the table. I am therefore leaving the APC table where I am not welcomed.”
Despite her resignation, Obasanjo expressed gratitude to President Bola Tinubu, Ogun APC Chairman Chief Yemi Sanusi, and the Ogun Central Senatorial leadership led by Chief Soremi for their support during her time in the party.
She had returned to active politics earlier this year, registering in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government, before declaring her governorship ambition.
