In a bid to adapt to emerging technology and strengthen modern policing, the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has reviewed the role of artificial intelligence in its operations as part of efforts to improve innovation and enhance security across the country.
The exercise reflects a gradual shift within the Force toward viewing artificial intelligence as a practical tool for intelligence gathering, crime prevention, and more efficient policing operations.
The review formed the focus of the Second AI-POL Leadership Dialogue Workshop on Advancing Innovation, Governance, and the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Law Enforcement, held yesterday, in Abuja.
The workshop brought together senior police officers, technology experts, and international partners to examine how artificial intelligence is reshaping modern security operations and how the Nigeria Police Force can responsibly integrate the technology into its work.
Discussions centred on practical applications of AI in policing, emerging challenges linked to its adoption, and lessons drawn from global best practices in technology-driven law enforcement.
Participants also explored ways to translate the knowledge gained into actionable reforms within their respective commands, with emphasis on improving efficiency, accountability, and operational effectiveness.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, said the engagement reinforced the reality that artificial intelligence is already transforming policing globally, stressing the need for the Force to adapt to emerging trends.
He commended participants, facilitators, and international partners for their contributions, and reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to strengthening collaboration on innovation-driven policing reforms.
A key highlight of the workshop was a presentation drawing from the 5th Global Meeting for AI and Law Enforcement, which identified Nigeria as a priority partner for the African AI Policing Pilot.
The Force expressed appreciation to all stakeholders involved, noting that the initiative aligns with its broader commitment to building a more accountable, efficient, and technology-driven policing system.
