The Niger State Government has clarified comments made by the Commissioner for Homeland Security, Maurice Magaji, following reports suggesting that he denied the recent bandit attack on Pissa Community in Borgu Local Government Area.
The government acknowledged that the community was attacked by armed bandits, resulting in the loss of lives and destruction of property, describing the incident as regrettable and extending condolences to the affected families and residents.
According to a statement issued yesterday by the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Obed Nana, media reports that interpreted the Homeland Security Commissioner’s remarks as a denial of the attack were inaccurate, insisting that his comments had been taken out of context.
It explained that the commissioner was not disputing the occurrence of the attack but was assuring the public that security personnel had swiftly responded to the incident, brought the situation under control and restored normalcy in the area.
The government said security agencies, in collaboration with local authorities and community stakeholders, acted promptly after the attack to contain the situation, prevent further casualties and stop the violence from spreading to neighbouring communities.
It added that security presence has since been strengthened in the area, while surveillance and intelligence-led operations are ongoing across vulnerable communities in the state.
The statement further quoted the commissioner as reaffirming the state government’s commitment to tackling all forms of criminality and supporting security agencies with the resources and coordination needed to protect lives and property.
The government also urged residents to remain calm, cooperate with security agencies and rely on verified information from official sources.
It reiterated its commitment to ensuring the safety and well-being of residents and pledged to continue implementing proactive measures to achieve lasting peace across Niger State.
