The Niger State House of Assembly has called on the state government to direct security agencies to intensify investigations and ensure the swift arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the killing of youth leader and community advocate, Jafar Abdullahi Dabawu.
The call followed a Motion of Urgent Public Importance moved by Dogari Daje, representing Munya Constituency, during plenary presided over by Speaker, Abdulmalik Mohammed Sarkin-Daji.
The motion was debated during the House sitting on Tuesday, where lawmakers expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding Dabawu’s death and the need to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Presenting the motion, Hon. Daje said every Nigerian is entitled to the protection of life and dignity, stressing that government has a responsibility to secure lives and property.
He described Dabawu as a respected community leader, youth advocate and former President of the Minna Emirate Youth Association.
According to the lawmaker, Dabawu was stabbed to death by suspected intruders at his residence in Maitumbi, Minna, in the early hours of May 21, 2026.
He explained that the deceased discovered his sitting room door open and went to investigate, only to be attacked by a hidden assailant who stabbed him in the chest and face.
Daje said Dabawu later died at the General Hospital, Minna, despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life. He noted that the Niger State Police Command had confirmed the incident as a homicide and commenced investigations.
The lawmaker warned that any delay in apprehending those responsible could embolden criminals, undermine public confidence in the justice system and weaken efforts to deter violent crimes.
He added that increasing cases of home invasions and violent attacks pose a threat to peace and security across the state.
Following deliberations, the House urged the Executive to direct security agencies to intensify investigations and ensure the prompt arrest and prosecution of all suspects connected to the murder.
Lawmakers also called for greater collaboration among the Police, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and other relevant agencies to conclude investigations and secure justice.
The Assembly further advocated enhanced intelligence gathering, surveillance operations, community policing initiatives and other crime prevention measures in Minna and across Niger State.
Members also commiserated with Dabawu’s family, the Minna Emirate Youth Association, the Minna Emirate Council and the people of Niger State over the loss.
The House mandated its Committee on Security to liaise with the Commissioner of Police and other security agencies, monitor the progress of investigations and report back with recommendations.
The motion was unanimously adopted and referred to the committee, while the resolutions were directed to be forwarded to the Executive for implementation.
Meanwhile, the Assembly commenced second reading of two financial reform bills seeking to establish the Niger State Assets Management Agency and amend the Niger State Fiscal Responsibility Commission Law, 2010.
Both bills were subsequently referred to the House Committee on Finance, which is expected to submit its report within four weeks.
