A new study conducted by researchers at Michigan State University has found evidence of a positive association between agricultural pesticide use and breast cancer incidence in rural counties across the United States, adding to growing concerns over the long-term health impacts of widespread pesticide exposure.
The findings, published in the journal Cancer Causes & Control, analyzed county-level pesticide use and breast cancer incidence data and concluded that rural communities exposed to higher levels of certain pesticides experience modestly higher rates of breast cancer compared to areas with lower exposure levels.
The research examined data from 2,457 U.S. counties after excluding regions with incomplete pesticide or cancer incidence records. Researchers relied on information from the U.S. Geological Survey’s (USGS) Pesticide National Synthesis Project, which tracks agricultural pesticide use across the country.
The study evaluated cumulative pesticide use between 2001 and 2015, covering 38 commonly used pesticides grouped into eight chemical classes, including neonicotinoids, organophosphates, phosphonates, pyrethroids, carbamates, organochlorines, triazines and several miscellaneous compounds.
To assess potential health impacts, scientists compared pesticide exposure data with breast cancer incidence rates recorded between 2016 and 2020 through the National Cancer Institute’s State Cancer Profiles. A latency period of five to fifteen years was incorporated into the analysis to account for the delayed development of cancer following environmental exposure.
Researchers also adjusted for several factors that could influence cancer rates, including smoking prevalence, poverty levels, unemployment, education status and residential mobility.
One of the study’s most significant findings was that rural counties appeared to bear a disproportionate burden of risk. According to the researchers, counties with higher exposure to endocrine-disrupting pesticides recorded a statistically significant increase in breast cancer incidence.

The analysis found that rural counties experienced approximately a 2 percent higher breast cancer incidence rate when compared with counties reporting lower pesticide use.
Among the pesticide categories examined, neonicotinoids and phosphonates showed particularly strong associations with increased breast cancer rates. The phosphonate class includes widely used herbicides such as glyphosate and glufosinate.
At the individual pesticide level, thiamethoxam, a neonicotinoid insecticide, and chlorpyrifos, an organophosphate insecticide, were identified as having significant associations with elevated breast cancer incidence.
The study further revealed that counties with the highest levels of pesticide use recorded substantially higher breast cancer rates than counties with the lowest usage levels. Researchers reported that counties in the highest pesticide-use category experienced approximately a 6 percent higher breast cancer incidence compared with those in the lowest category.
The researchers also observed changing pesticide application trends over the study period. Use of neonicotinoids, phosphonates and pyrethroids increased between 2001 and 2015, while the use of carbamates, organochlorines, organophosphates and triazines generally declined.
The findings have intensified calls from environmental and public health advocates for stricter regulation of agricultural chemicals and increased support for organic farming systems.
Advocacy groups argue that the study adds to a growing body of scientific evidence suggesting that current pesticide regulations fail to adequately address the cumulative and long-term health effects of exposure. Critics have also pointed to the continued use of certain pesticides in the United States that have been restricted or banned in other jurisdictions, including parts of Europe, Brazil and Japan.
Supporters of organic agriculture contend that stronger investment in organic farming could help reduce human exposure to potentially harmful chemicals while supporting ecosystem health and agricultural productivity.
The Michigan State University study aligns with a number of earlier investigations examining links between pesticide exposure and breast cancer.
Research published in PLOS One found that women in rural regions of Brazil with long-term occupational exposure to pesticides were more likely to develop aggressive forms of breast cancer. The study reported that many participants had direct contact with pesticides for decades and often handled the chemicals without personal protective equipment.
Another study published in Immunopharmacology and Immunotoxicology concluded that occupational pesticide exposure can alter the clinical presentation of breast cancer and affect immune system responses among patients.
Additional research in Ecotoxicology and Environmental Safety suggested that atrazine, a widely used herbicide, may contribute to breast cancer development by interfering with immune system functions and promoting tumour growth.
Meanwhile, studies published in Chemosphere and Science of The Total Environment have highlighted the endocrine-disrupting properties of glyphosate and other pesticides, with researchers reporting significant associations between pesticide exposure and breast cancer risk across multiple population-based studies.
The latest findings are expected to fuel further debate among policymakers, scientists, agricultural stakeholders and health advocates over the regulation of pesticide use and the need for expanded research into the long-term health consequences of chemical exposure in farming communities.
Researchers emphasized that while the study identifies statistically significant associations, further investigations are needed to better understand the biological mechanisms involved and to determine the extent to which specific pesticides contribute to breast cancer development.
