TWELVE of Nigeria’s most promising engineering teams have secured places in the next stage of the Nigerian Engineering Olympiad (NEO) following the successful conclusion of the 2026 Regional Competition. Selected from 30 teams representing universities and polytechnics across the country, the winners distinguished themselves with innovative solutions addressing critical challenges in healthcare, energy, agriculture, security, infrastructure, and industrial manufacturing.
The regional competition marked a significant milestone in the Olympiad’s mission to promote engineering excellence, innovation, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving among young Nigerians.
Hosted across Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones, Yenagoa, Enugu, Ibadan, Abuja, Yola, and Kano, the competition attracted 30 shortlisted teams from federal, state, and private universities, as well as polytechnics. Before the regional stage, each team received a ₦3 million grant to support prototype development, technical mentorship, and logistics.
Following rigorous technical assessments and presentations, two teams from each region emerged as winners and secured places in the next phase of the competition.
The 12 qualifying teams will now proceed to an intensive national bootcamp in Lagos, where they will receive mentorship from engineering professionals, business leaders, industry experts, and innovation specialists. The bootcamp is designed to strengthen participants’ technical, business development, and presentation skills while helping them refine their innovations into scalable and commercially viable solutions.
Following the bootcamp, the teams will compete in semi-final knockout rounds that will produce four finalists. The finalists will then advance to the Grand Finale, where they will compete for a share of ₦100 million in seed funding, alongside continued technical and business support to transform their innovations into sustainable ventures.
The regional winners and their innovations include Team Protronics of the University of Port Harcourt, which developed Keytric, a WiFi-enabled smart mechanical door lock that helps reduce energy waste and fire risks, and Team Vhorde of the University of Benin, which designed an AI-powered smart glasses system for visually impaired users.
From the South-East, Team Flameless of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, developed a system that converts flare gas into electricity for surrounding communities, while The Oil Alchemist Team of Imo State University created a portable pyrolysis system that converts waste engine oil into valuable energy products.
Representing the South-West, Team Health Guardian of the University of Lagos developed a portable device for the early detection of preterm premature rupture of membranes (PPROM), while Team Aurora of the University of Ibadan designed Aurora Birth, a health technology solution aimed at reducing neonatal mortality caused by birth asphyxia.
In the North-Central region, Team Fortizo of the University of Jos developed FarmAnchor, a solar-powered AI-enabled device that helps farmers detect crop diseases and soil deficiencies, while Team TRI-CATALYST of the University of Abuja created a locally sourced catalyst designed to improve gasoline quality in refining processes.
From the North-East, Team Goodnews of the Nigerian Army University developed PipePatrol, an AI-powered pipeline surveillance system, while Team Mavericks of Modibbo Adama University designed Ubuntu Sapphire, a community-based rapid emergency alert system.
Representing the North-West, Team Adustech of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology developed an automated solar-powered agricultural dryer, while Team Agritherm Solutions of Ahmadu Bello University designed solar-powered cold storage systems for smallholder farmers in off-grid communities.
Projects were evaluated based on technical merit and innovation, practicality and scalability, and societal impact and sustainability. Participants presented solutions across key sectors, including healthcare, energy, agriculture, security, infrastructure, and industrial manufacturing.
The successful completion of the regional competition underscores the immense potential of Nigerian youths to drive innovation and solve critical national challenges through engineering. It also highlights the importance of creating platforms that connect young innovators with industry expertise, mentorship, and funding opportunities.
NEO is a strategic initiative designed to address Nigeria’s engineering skills gap and strengthen the country’s innovation ecosystem. By providing seed funding, mentorship, technical guidance, and industry exposure, the programme seeks to develop a pipeline of highly skilled innovators capable of contributing to Nigeria’s energy, manufacturing, technology, and infrastructure sectors.
The initiative is sponsored by the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board (NCDMB), funded by Renaissance Africa Energy Company Limited and First Exploration & Petroleum Development Company (First E&P), technically supported by the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), and implemented by Enactus Nigeria.
