The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has cautioned against calls for statewide strikes and mass protests over the recent abduction of teachers and pupils in Oyo State, warning that such actions could worsen insecurity.
NANS said the situation is heartbreaking and urged Nigerians to prioritise efforts aimed at securing the safe return of the abducted victims rather than shutting down economic and social activities.
The association, in a statement signed by its National President, Akinteye Babatunde Afeez, said while the right to protest is constitutional, it must be exercised responsibly during sensitive security challenges.
It argued that strikes and mass shutdowns could inadvertently serve the objectives of terrorists seeking fear and instability.
NANS further called for national unity and collective responsibility in addressing insecurity, insisting that citizens, communities and government must work together to defeat terrorism.
It urged Nigerians to support ongoing efforts by security agencies to rescue the abducted pupils and teachers.
The group expressed hope that the victims would be safely rescued and reunited with their families.
