LAWYERS representing Mr. Mountaga Tall have announced plans to seek intervention from international human rights bodies over his disappearance after more than one month.
The counsel said Tall was abducted from his Bamako residence on May 3 by armed men who have yet to be identified.
They said judicial authorities had not provided the family with information on investigations or any results obtained since his disappearance.
According to the lawyers, no prosecuting authority has declared that criminal proceedings were initiated against Tall.
They also argued that legal procedures required for instituting proceedings against a lawyer were not followed.
The counsel endorsed an earlier statement by the President of the Mali Bar Association, which described the abduction and detention as serious criminal offences.
They said the state remained responsible for guaranteeing the security of citizens, foreign residents and their property.
The lawyers further maintained that violations of legal protections granted to lawyers could render any proceedings brought against them null and void.
They cited a May 22 ruling by the Court of Appeal in Fada N’Gourma, Burkina Faso, which annulled proceedings against a lawyer over procedural violations.
The counsel welcomed what they described as greater restraint in social media discussions surrounding the case.
They said such caution would support efforts to combat cybercrime and prevent misinformation.
The lawyers announced that they would now turn to international human rights protection mechanisms, particularly the United Nations and African human rights systems.
They also urged Malian authorities to intensify efforts to locate Tall and ensure that those responsible for his disappearance are identified and punished.
The statement was signed by lawyers Mamadou Camara, Mamary Sama Diarra, Alifa Habib Kone and Dianguina Tounkara, all members of the Mali Bar Association.
Tall is a prominent Malian lawyer, former government minister and opposition politician who heads the National Congress for Democratic Initiative (CNID).
He has been an influential figure in Mali’s political landscape and has represented political actors involved in disputes with the country’s military-led authorities.
His reported abduction occurred amid heightened political and security tensions following coordinated attacks by armed groups across several Malian cities in late April.
The attacks reportedly claimed dozens of lives, including that of Mali’s Defence Minister, and prompted a series of security operations and arrests.
According to accounts by his family, armed and hooded men arrived at Tall’s residence in unmarked vehicles during the night and took him away without presenting an arrest warrant.
His family has maintained that authorities have neither disclosed his whereabouts nor formally announced charges against him.
Human rights groups and legal organisations have since expressed concern over the circumstances surrounding his disappearance and called for due process to be observed.
The lawyers pledged to keep the Malian public informed of developments in the case while respecting professional confidentiality obligations.
