The House of Representatives has called for urgent action from the federal government and security agencies to secure the release of abducted students and teachers from Baptist Nursery and Primary School (Yawota), Community Grammar School (Esiele), and L.A. Primary School in Oyo State.
The lawmakers also condemned the killing of teacher Michael Oyedokun, who was beheaded in captivity after being abducted from Community High School, Ahoro-Esiele.
The resolution was passed on Tuesday in Abuja following a motion moved by Hon. Olamijuwonlo Alao-Akala, who drew attention to the worsening security situation and the urgent need for intervention.
During the plenary, lawmakers stressed the need for immediate action, including the establishment of a permanent military base in Orire Local Government Area to strengthen security in the affected communities.
“Bring our remaining sons, daughters, and teachers home alive without further delay, for every hour lost is an hour in which we risk losing them forever, and that risk now outweighs every other consideration before us,” Alao-Akala said while presenting the motion.
Members of the House also called for the urgent implementation of a decentralised security framework, arguing that current structures were insufficient to prevent repeated attacks.
They specifically advocated for the creation of state police, local government policing units, decentralised courts, and an integrated national intelligence and surveillance network.
“People have waited long enough, and every further postponement is paid for in the blood of innocents,” lawmakers resolved.
The House noted that the recommendations were necessary to address the scale of insecurity and prevent further attacks on schools and rural communities.
The resolution comes amid nationwide protests, as the Nigerian Union of Teachers staged rallies across several states over rising attacks on educational institutions.
Civil society organisations also held demonstrations in Ibadan on Monday, demanding the immediate rescue of abducted victims and stronger protection for schools nationwide.
