The Lagos State Government has taken a significant step toward improving healthcare access in underserved areas with plans to deploy telemedicine services across 152 riverine and coastal communities, leveraging technology to bridge longstanding gaps in healthcare delivery.
The initiative is being driven through a strategic partnership between Blue Lagos Initiatives and the Lagos State Health Management Agency (LASHMA), aimed at bringing quality healthcare services closer to residents of hard-to-reach communities across the state.
The collaboration was formalized during a high-level meeting between the Blue Lagos delegation led by its Convener, Saheed Adesanya, and the management team of LASHMA headed by the Permanent Secretary, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba.
The discussions yesterday focused on innovative approaches to expanding healthcare coverage and improving access to essential medical services for vulnerable populations.
Under the proposed Telemedicine Scheme, residents of riverine and coastal settlements will be able to consult healthcare professionals remotely, access medical advice, receive referrals, and benefit from follow-up care without the burden of travelling long distances to health facilities.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, Adesanya described the partnership as a major milestone in efforts to improve the well-being of residents in coastal communities.
“Healthcare remains a fundamental need for every citizen. This partnership demonstrates our shared commitment to ensuring that residents of riverine and coastal communities are not left behind in accessing quality healthcare services. Through technology-driven solutions, we can bridge existing gaps and bring healthcare closer to the people,” he said.
The Blue Lagos Convener noted that many riverine communities continue to face challenges in accessing timely medical attention due to geographical barriers, inadequate transportation, and limited healthcare infrastructure. He expressed confidence that telemedicine would provide a practical and sustainable solution to these challenges.
Also speaking, the Permanent Secretary of LASHMA, Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to expanding healthcare access and advancing universal health coverage across Lagos State.
According to her, the use of digital technology and strategic partnerships has become increasingly important in ensuring that quality healthcare reaches vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations.
She stressed that the telemedicine programme aligns with the state’s broader healthcare agenda of delivering equitable healthcare services to all residents, irrespective of location.
The initiative is expected to improve health outcomes for thousands of residents by reducing barriers to medical consultation, promoting preventive healthcare, and facilitating quicker access to professional medical support.
To ensure successful implementation, both organizations agreed to continue consultations on rollout strategies, community sensitization programmes, stakeholder engagement, and partnership frameworks that will guarantee the sustainability of the scheme.
The partnership underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to inclusive development and its vision of leveraging innovation and technology to improve the quality of life of all residents, including those living in remote riverine and coastal communities.
With the planned rollout, healthcare delivery in Lagos is set to enter a new phase where distance and geography will no longer be major obstacles to accessing essential medical services.
