United Kingdom Prime Minister Keir Starmer has resigned from his position as Prime Minister and leader of the Labour Party.
Starmer announced his decision outside 10 Downing Street on Monday, saying his actions in office had always been driven by what he considered the interest of the country.
“Every decision I have made has been about putting the country I love first,” he said.
Labour begins leadership transition
The former Prime Minister confirmed that he had informed King Charles III of his resignation.
He also instructed the Labour Party’s National Executive Committee to begin the process of selecting a new leader.
According to the announcement, nominations for the leadership contest will open on July 9, with the transition expected to be completed before Parliament returns in September.
Starmer to oversee handover
Despite stepping down, Starmer said he would remain in office temporarily to ensure a smooth transfer of power.
His resignation comes after increasing pressure within the Labour Party following recent political developments.
The pressure intensified after rival Andy Burnham secured a major by-election victory in North West England, increasing calls for leadership changes before Parliament resumes.
