JUST IN: Families, colleagues bid Alex Ekubo farewell

Amid eulogies and tears, relatives and colleagues of late Nollywood actor Alex Ekubo gathered in his hometown in Abia State to lay him to rest in his family compound after he died at the age of 40 following a battle with kidney cancer.

Ekubo passed away on May 5, 2026, while receiving treatment at Evercare Hospital in Lagos, bringing an end to a career that made him one of the prominent faces in Nigeria’s film industry.

He was laid to rest at his family house in Aziukwu Ujari Village on Thursday, following a funeral service and reception held at Mary Slessor School Field, Amanagwu Village, Arochukwu.

Prior to the burial, a service of songs was held on June 10, 2026, at The Monarch Event Centre, Lekki, Lagos, from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.

A wake-keep was also held on Wednesday at the family residence at 7 Ekubo-Okwaraeke Avenue, Aziukwu Ujari Village, Arochukwu, Abia State, as part of the burial programme.

The burial attracted family members from far and near, colleagues in the entertainment industry, friends, and fans who came to pay their last respects.

In a statement following his passing, the family described Alex Ekubo, fondly known as “Ikuku,” as a beloved husband, son, brother, and friend, noting that his death was a deeply painful loss and urging the public to keep the family in their prayers.

They also described him as a courageous fighter who battled the illness with strength and hope, believing he would emerge victorious at the end.
