THE presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has described June 12 as a significant date for reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic progress, noting that it should serve as a yearly benchmark for assessing the country’s political and electoral systems.
In a message marking Democracy Day, the NDC presidential candidate said the essence of June 12 goes beyond commemoration, urging Nigerians to critically examine whether elections today are as transparent as they were in the era of the 1993 Nigerian presidential election, and whether democratic institutions are truly accountable to the people.
He said the day represents both reflection and aspiration, honouring a difficult chapter in Nigeria’s democratic history while reminding citizens of the enduring power of collective will in shaping governance.
The candidate further noted that June 12, now officially observed as Democracy Day in Nigeria, remains a symbolic foundation of the nation’s modern democratic identity, representing both past struggles and the continuing quest for a more accountable system of government.
