Japan crush Tunisia 4-0 in historic 1,000th World Cup match as Curacao earns first-ever point
Japan took a giant step toward the knockout stages of the FIFA World Cup with a commanding 4-0 victory over Tunisia on Saturday, a match that also marked the 1,000th game in the tournament’s history.
The emphatic win saw the Asian powerhouse move level on four points with the Netherlands national football team at the top of Group F, strengthening their chances of securing a place in the last 32.
Striker Ayase Ueda led the charge with a brace, while Daichi Kamada and Junya Ito also found the net in a dominant performance by the Blue Samurai at Monterrey Stadium.
For Tunisia, the defeat ended any realistic hopes of progressing to the knockout rounds after they had already suffered a heavy 5-1 loss to Sweden national football team in their opening match.
Japan entered the contest buoyed by a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands and quickly demonstrated why they are considered one of Asia’s strongest football nations.
The breakthrough came just four minutes into the game when Kamada finished from close range after an intricate move involving midfielders Ao Tanaka and Keito Nakamura.
The early goal set the tone for the match, with Japan dominating possession and creating chances at will. Tunisia struggled to cope with the speed and precision of the Japanese attack, and only a desperate goal-line clearance by Dylan Bronn prevented the scoreline from worsening in the opening stages.

Tunisia goalkeeper Aymen Dahmen was repeatedly called into action and produced several important saves to keep his side in the contest.
However, Japan doubled their lead in the 31st minute when Ueda capitalised on uncertainty in the Tunisian defence, powering a low strike into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.
The African side, playing their first match under newly appointed coach Herve Renard, never truly recovered. Renard had only recently taken charge after the dismissal of predecessor Sabri Lamouchi following Tunisia’s heavy defeat to Sweden.
Japan maintained complete control after the break and added a third goal in the 69th minute when Ito latched onto a perfectly weighted through pass before calmly slotting the ball beyond Dahmen.
Ueda completed the rout seven minutes from time, rising highest to head home his second goal of the evening and seal an impressive victory for the Blue Samurai.
The result leaves Japan firmly on course for qualification to the knockout phase, while Tunisia’s World Cup campaign is effectively over after back-to-back defeats.
Earlier in the day, World Cup debutants Curacao national football team achieved a landmark result by earning their first-ever point at the tournament following a resilient goalless draw against Ecuador national football team.
The hero of the encounter was Curacao goalkeeper Eloy Room, who delivered a remarkable performance to frustrate the South American side throughout the match in Kansas City.
Despite Ecuador registering 28 shots, including 15 efforts on target, Room stood firm with a series of outstanding saves that denied the favourites a breakthrough.
The 0-0 draw keeps Curacao’s hopes of reaching the knockout rounds alive and adds another chapter to the fairytale story of the Caribbean nation’s maiden World Cup appearance.
While Ecuador will rue a host of missed opportunities, Curacao celebrated a historic achievement that could prove crucial in their quest to progress from Group E.
