The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has deployed Abayomi Shogunle to the position of Commisioner of Police in Ekiti State ahead of the forthcoming gubernatorial election.
Disu held that the the deployment of Shogunle to the state would aid adequate security operations during the polls to allow electorates cast their votes and ensure that their fundermental franchise rights are being carried out appropriately..
The IGP, noted that the initiative for the election scheduled for Saturday, June 20, 2026 was part of efforts to ensure a peaceful, credible and violence-free poll, adding that the action aligns with strategic operational steps to guarantee adequate security before, during and after the election.
During the takeover at the Ekiti State Police Command on Wednesday, Shogunle commenced implementation of enhanced security measures and activated intelligence-driven operations to prevent political violence, thuggery, cult-related activities and other threats.
The new designee also rolled out counter-misinformation initiatives and detailed security planning for the movement of electoral materials, INEC officials and personnel involved in the exercise.
The Command stated that adequate security personnel are being strategically deployed to all identified flashpoints across the state to forestall any breach of peace and ensure a hitch-free electoral process.
Shogunle assured that officers assigned to election duties had been thoroughly briefed on professional conduct and would operate strictly within the provisions of the Constitution and the Electoral Act.
He urged political parties, candidates, community leaders and residents to cooperate with security agencies and promptly report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or through dedicated telephone lines as the Command reiterated its commitment to the protection of lives and property for a free, fair and credible election.
