Tragedy struck in Gyel community in Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State, as a resident was killed in a renewed wave of violence by armed men, while another person sustained injuries during the attack.
The victim was identified as 36-year-old Shedrack Dalyop. His body was later discovered after residents received information linked to the assault.
Dalyop’s body was recovered after the injured survivor, Mang Davou, managed to reach his relatives and report the attack, which led to the discovery of the deceased.
Community leaders and youth representatives confirmed the incident on Monday, with the Berom Youth Moulders Association (BYM) describing it as part of a disturbing pattern of repeated violence in the area.
According to the group’s spokesperson, Rwang Tengwong, the latest attack has heightened anxiety among residents already grappling with insecurity.
He said the incident occurred shortly after another similar attack in Sabon Gidan Kanar area, the same area, further increasing tension and distrust within the community.
“This latest killing has further heightened fears among community members. Residents are worried about the recurring attacks and expect urgent action from security agencies,” Tengwong said.
The group called on security authorities under Operation Enduring Peace and other relevant agencies to investigate the attack, identify those responsible, and ensure they are prosecuted.
“The perpetrators must be tracked down and brought before the law. Communities deserve protection, and residents should be able to live without fear of violence,” he added.
The association also extended condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured victim a speedy recovery, while urging sustained efforts to prevent further attacks in the region.
Meanwhile, attempts to obtain an official reaction from the Plateau State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report, as spokesperson Alfred Alabo had yet to respond.
