German ex-footballer, Thomas Müller, and his wife, Lisa, have parted ways over unresolved differences between the couple, ending their 17-year marriage.
The couple, as gathered, separated before the footballer left Germany to join the Vancouver Whitecaps of Canada after leaving Bayern Munich, following the expiration of his contract.
Confirming the separation, the couple’s attorney, Christian Schertz, stated that the former couple, who were 36-year-old, parted ways recently, saying “The couple separated amicably some time ago”.
Exactly when the two decided to go their separate ways is not known. No further statements on the matter will reportedly be made. The lawyer requests that people “respect my clients’ privacy and refrain from further inquiries”.
In May 2025, the Müllers had still defied the separation rumors. Lisa and Thomas Müller appeared together in public at the “Pferd International” in Munich. Rumors of a possible marital crisis had previously persisted stubbornly for months.
While he moved to Canada in 2025 for professional reasons, his wife remained in Germany. The 2014 World Cup winner, who plays for the Vancouver Whitecaps in the North American MLS, later used the winter break for a visit with family in his Bavarian homeland.
On Instagram, the footballer posted a selfie in mid-December showing him with his wife. “Christmas time is family time”, he wrote in English.
The Müllers married in 2009 and own a horse breeding farm near Munich. In an interview with “Welt am Sonntag”, Müller gave surprisingly personal insights in February.
“Before I made the decision to move to Vancouver, I made a list of pros and cons”, he said.
“Therefore, I was aware that there would also be things that wouldn’t be so appealing, especially given the enormous distance from home. But I’ve always been someone who deals well with reality. […] And part of my time in Vancouver now means that I rarely have my wife and the horses around me.”
He also said: “I’m not really the homesick or missing-someone type, I never have been. Not even as a child.”
