The Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Shehu Mohammed, has inaugurated the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme (NigeriaRAP) Steering Committee, reinforcing the Corps’ commitment to strategic partnerships and data driven road infrastructure safety management aimed at reducing road traffic crashes and fatalities across the country.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting held at the Corps Marshal’s Conference Hall, FRSC National Headquarters, Abuja on Thursday, Shehu described the inauguration as a major milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to build safer roads and achieve global road safety targets.
He stated that road traffic crashes remain a significant public health and development challenge worldwide, emphasising that proactive road infrastructure assessment is critical to safeguarding road users and saving lives.
According to him, the steering committee will provide strategic direction, coordination, and leadership for the successful implementation of NigeriaRAP.
Blueprint reports that the Nigeria Road Assessment Programme was established by the FRSC in partnership with the International Road Assessment Programme (iRAP) to systematically assess road infrastructure safety, identify high risk road sections, and implement measures that enhance protection for all road users, particularly vulnerable groups.
The Corps Marshal explained that the programme is built on three key pillars, strengthening local partnerships, promoting international collaboration, and supporting the attainment of Three Star Road Safety Ratings and above on Nigerian roads.
He recalled that Nigeria’s journey toward institutionalising the programme began with the inauguration of a Stakeholders Committee in February 2021 and gained further momentum with the signing of a National Licence Agreement between FRSC and iRAP on November 18, 2025, which formally launched NigeriaRAP in Nigeria.
Membership of the Steering Committee comprises representatives from key public and private sector organisations, including the KRSD Foundation, Federal Ministry of Works, Federal Roads Maintenance Agency (FERMA), Federal Ministry of Transportation, Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (NBRRI), Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT), Automobile and Touring Club of Nigeria (ATCN), Green Light Initiative, and other strategic partners dedicated to advancing road safety and sustainable transportation.
