FRSC arrests 1,691 traffic offenders in 5days
The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has intensified its nationwide enforcement drive, recording 1,691 arrests within five days under Operation Guduma, a special intervention targeting dangerous road use practices and vehicle identification fraud.
A breakdown of the arrests shows that 683 offenders were apprehended for overloading and mixed-loading violations, 1,003 for the use of improper or illegal number plates, and five suspects for using fake diplomatic plates.
According to the traffic agency, the exercise was carried out across key transport corridors in eleven states, targeting persistent infractions that endanger lives and undermine national security.
Speaking through the Corps’ social media channel on Monday, Deputy Corps Commander and Public Education Officer Osondu Ohaeri said the operation exposed deep systemic risks, including widespread abuse of unauthorised vehicle identities and deceptive registration practices used to evade enforcement.
He noted that the findings point to a growing culture of disregard for road safety regulations, warning that such behaviour continues to fuel avoidable crashes and facilitate criminal activities, while stressing that the misuse of diplomatic plates and persistent overloading are not mere traffic violations but direct threats to public safety and national security.
The statement further revealed that several intercepted vehicles were found operating under unsafe conditions, including improperly secured cargo and dangerously overloaded containers, situations that significantly increase the risk of road traffic accidents, fatalities, and economic losses.
Reacting to the development, Corps Marshal Shehu Mohammed reaffirmed the FRSC’s commitment to sustained intelligence-driven enforcement, stressing that the agency will continue to dismantle fraudulent and unsafe practices across the country’s road network.
He warned that the Corps’ zero-tolerance stance on violations remains unchanged, emphasizing that every preventable crash averted represents lives saved and greater national productivity preserved.
Buoyed by the outcome of Operation Guduma, the FRSC announced plans to institutionalise the initiative across major highways nationwide while strengthening collaboration with other security agencies to ensure offenders are not only arrested but also prosecuted.
