Francis Duru debunks illness rumours, blasts creators of viral video

Veteran Nollywood actor Francis Duru has dismissed widespread claims that he is critically ill, describing a viral video portraying him in a frail condition as false, malicious and deliberately designed to mislead the public.

The actor reacted after footage suggesting he was battling a severe health condition circulated across social media platforms, triggering concern among fans, colleagues and well-wishers.

In a video shared on his Instagram page, the 56-year-old actor reassured the public that he is in good health and has never experienced the level of illness depicted in the viral clip.

Addressing the rumours directly, Duru expressed disappointment over what he described as a calculated attempt to spread falsehoods and create unnecessary panic.

“I am making this video with regard to very wicked videos circulating around about me being sick to the level that you could see in that video,” he said.

The actor firmly denied the claims, insisting that the images and narrative being circulated did not reflect his true condition.

“Well, I have never been that sick and will never be that sick. And by God’s grace, we keep being stronger and stronger,” he added.

Duru did not hide his frustration with those responsible for the misleading content, accusing them of intentionally fabricating stories to generate attention and increase online engagement.

According to him, some individuals have made a habit of creating negative content about others in pursuit of internet traffic and social media relevance.

“That video is a handiwork of merchants of darkness, of wickedness, people who sit and concoct negativity for people,” he said.

“You just don’t want to see people rise. You just don’t believe in people’s success, all in the course of driving traffic.”

The veteran actor also expressed concern over the growing misuse of digital technology and artificial intelligence tools, warning that manipulated content could increasingly be used to deceive the public and tarnish reputations.

“And if this is what social media is all about or AI, then we are in big trouble indeed,” he stated.

Duru revealed that the rumour had unsettled many of his friends, associates and supporters, some of whom contacted him in distress after coming across the viral video.

He explained that he decided to address the matter publicly to reassure everyone who had been worried about his wellbeing and to put an end to the speculation.

The actor urged the public to disregard any reports suggesting that he was suffering from a life-threatening illness, stressing that the claims were entirely unfounded.

“This is just to let you guys know that this is me talking to you. Anything beyond this is their business,” he said.

He further appealed to concerned friends and fans not to be alarmed by the false reports.

“Please, my friends who have been embarrassed, scared, even to call me, and those who just call for calling sake, just to know whether it is true, well, this is me,” he added.

Duru remains one of Nollywood’s most respected actors, with a career spanning several decades and numerous acclaimed film and television appearances.

The actor has also endured personal tragedy in recent years, having lost his son, Ifeanyi Duru, in August 2024. Despite the challenges, he continues to maintain an active presence in the Nigerian entertainment industry and remains a beloved figure among fans.
