A retired Major General of the Nigerian Army and former Director of Defence Information, Rabe Abubakar, has died while being held captive by bandits, the Katsina State Government has confirmed.
Abubakar and his wife were abducted in May while travelling through Katsina State, sparking widespread concern and efforts by security agencies to secure their release.
The tragic development was announced in a statement issued on Saturday by the Katsina State Commissioner for Internal Security and Home Affairs, Nasiru Mu’azu. According to the government, the retired military officer died as a result of health complications related to diabetes and hypertension while in captivity.
“It is with profound sadness that we confirm the General’s death while in bandits’ captivity,” the statement said.
The commissioner disclosed that despite sustained efforts by the Katsina State Government and security agencies to rescue the retired officer, the situation ended in tragedy.
“Despite the relentless and concerted efforts of the State Government and various Security Agencies to secure his safe release, the situation ended in this tragedy,” Mu’azu stated.
He clarified that the late General died a natural death arising from complications of his existing medical conditions.
“The deceased retired General died a natural death from complications of diabetes and hypertension,” the statement added.
The Katsina State Government described the late military officer’s death as a significant loss not only to his immediate family but also to the state and the nation as a whole.
“His abduction and subsequent death are not only a loss to his family and Katsina State but a monumental loss to the entire country,” the commissioner noted.

Governor Dikko Umaru Radda extended his condolences to the family of the deceased, the Nigerian Armed Forces, and the nation, describing the incident as a painful reminder of the growing security challenges facing communities across the country.
“His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Katsina State, Malam Dikko Umaru Radda, extends his deepest condolences to the family of the late General and the country at large,” the statement said.
The governor reportedly described the incident as a “dark moment” and stressed the need for a united and intensified campaign against criminal groups terrorising communities in the region.
The state government reiterated its commitment to collaborating with the Federal Government and security agencies to combat banditry and ensure that those responsible for criminal acts are brought to justice.
“We assure the citizens of Katsina State that our resolve to eliminate banditry and ensure the safety of all residents remains unshaken,” the statement emphasized.
The government also offered prayers for the repose of the late military officer’s soul and comfort for his grieving family.
Major General Rabe Abubakar served as Director of Defence Information and was widely respected for his contributions to military communications and national security. His death adds to growing concerns over insecurity and the continued threat posed by armed bandit groups in parts of northern Nigeria.
