The Federation of International Football Association, FIFA, has slammed a three-match ban on South African player, Themba Zwane, following the red card incident against Mexico in the opening game of the 2026 World Cup.
FIFA disclosed that it has extended the initial one-match suspension to three, disclosing that its disciplinary committee imposed the ruling which is subject to an appeal.
”The FIFA Disciplinary Committee has imposed the following sanction on Themba Zwane who was sent off in South Africa’s opener against Mexico,” a statement by the football governing issued on Wednesday reads.
”His one-match ban has been upgraded to a three-match suspension. The decision is subject is subject to appeal.”
The defender was adjudged to have collided with an opponent and given his marching order in a game his side lost by two goals to nill, forcing the Bafana Bafana in need of wins in their next two group stage games against Czech Republic and Korea Republic to have a realistic chance of progressing to the Round of 16.
