The FG, through it’s National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), warned Nigerians against a fraudulent online portal falsely claiming to offer free National Identification Number (NIN) data correction services, describing it as a phishing scam aimed at stealing personal information and compromising users’ identity records.
The warning follows the circulation of a social media post advertising a purported coorrection Portal and directing members of the public to malicious links under the guise of facilitating free modifications to NIN details.
In a statement posted on its official social media platforms on Tuesday, NIMC dismissed the claim as false and cautioned Nigerians against engaging with any unauthorized websites or links claiming to provide identity data correction services on behalf of the commission.
According to the commission, the message is part of a phishing scheme designed by cybercriminals to obtain sensitive personal information from unsuspecting citizens.
NIMC reassured Nigerians that the National Identity Database remains secure and fully protected, stressing that there has been no breach of its systems.
“The National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” the commission stated, while urging members of the public to remain vigilant and verify information through official channels before taking any action.
The agency specifically warned citizens not to click on unauthorized links circulated through social media, messaging applications, or other online platforms, noting that such links could expose users to identity theft, financial fraud, and other cyber-related crimes.
To ensure the safety of citizens’ data, NIMC advised individuals seeking modifications, updates, or corrections to their NIN records to use only its approved and verified service channels.
The commission said NIN data updates can be carried out through its official Self-Service Modification Portal at (https://selfservicemodification.nimc.gov.ng) or by visiting any authorized NIMC enrollment or service centre nationwide.
NIMC further urged Nigerians to rely solely on information published through its official communication channels and website for updates regarding identity management services.
The commission reiterated its commitment to safeguarding citizens’ personal information and maintaining the integrity of Nigeria’s national identity system, while encouraging the public to report suspicious messages, websites, or online activities falsely claiming affiliation with NIMC.
