Nigeria’s Olympic Committee (NOC) has postponed the 2026 Olympic Day from June 27 to July 4 to allow states sufficient time to organise celebrations without conflicts or logistical problems in the current tough economic climate.
Olympic Day is a yearly global occasion promoted by the International Olympic Committee to encourage broad public engagement in physical activities without competition.
It seeks to spread the message that sports are essential for building healthier and more active communities.
In a statement released on Monday by the PRO of NOC, Tony Nezianya, sent to Persecondnews, the Commission’s Chairman, Dr Abdul Ibrahim, acknowledged the difficulties brought by the present economic conditions.
He, however, urged members to put in maximum effort to make the event a huge success, noting that they have always aimed high and this year should be no different.
Dr Ibrahim also lauded the Nigeria Olympic Committee, under the leadership of Engr. Habu Ahmed Gumel, for its reliable support to the commission’s programmes.
No fewer than 18 states have so far declared interest in hosting this year’s Olympic Day events.
The commission said it awaits confirmation from additional states.
The Sport-For-All Commission has urged corporate organisations, philanthropic individuals and the general public to participate in and support the celebrations.
The goal is to use the event to promote national unity, bridge gaps between generations and encourage a healthier society by enjoying the social and physical benefits of exercise.
