THE Edo Police Command has assured residents that its Anti-Kidnapping Unit is actively trailing suspects behind the abduction of Mrs Precious Oseghale, whose kidnap near the Benin Airport Road Vegetable Market is currently trending online.
ASP Eno Ikoedem, the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, disclosed this on Monday while speaking on the incident with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Benin.
NAN recalls that the incident occured at the popular Benin Airport Road vegetable market on Sunday, leading to the abduction of the woman, now identified as Mrs Oseghale.
According to Ikoedem, the command has deployed all necessary resources to track down those responsible and remains confident of a swift rescue.
“Our anti-Kidnapping unit is already on their trail and we are making significant progress.
“We are confident that in less than no time, she will be rescued and the perpetrators will be brought to book,” Ikoedem said.
Responding to questions over the absence of ransom demands nearly 24 hours after the incident, the police spokesman noted that not all abduction cases follow the same pattern.
“Abduction cases are not all about ransom. As I said earlier, we are already on their trail and making significant progress.
“I cannot give to many details to the public for now but be assured that we are on top of the situation,” she stated.
The PPRO assured that comprehensive information would be released once investigations were concluded.
On whether the victim was specifically targeted or became vulnerable due to road conditions in the area, the PPRO said that conclusions would be drawn only from verified findings.
She urged residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by promptly reporting suspicious movements.
“Residents are advised to avoid spreading misinformation and to report any suspicious activity to the nearest police station or through our emergency lines.
” It is better to report something that turns out to be false than to ignore it and allow a crime to occur,” she said.
The command also dismissed reports suggesting that police officers were present at the market when the incident occurred but failed to intervene, describing the claims as false.
“Officers were deployed to the area, and the victim’s husband and children were taken to safety.
” However, officers were not on duty at the Vegetable Market at the time of the incident. I can confirm that,” she said.
she expressed optimism that the woman would be safely rescued and reunited with her family while those responsible would face prosecution.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the abduction has again, generated concerns among residents and traders in the Benin Metropolis with many calling for enhanced security measures around the busy commercial areas and major roads in the state. (NAN)
