The interview was recorded during Trump’s visit to Wisconsin, a key battleground state that he won in 2024. The conversation, which was repeatedly interrupted by rainy weather, covered a range of political issues before turning to California’s vote-counting process.
The disagreement began when Welker noted that Republicans had performed well in California’s June 2 primary elections. Trump, however, argued that their position was weakening because “they’re dropping fast because it’s a rigged election.”
As the discussion moved to the counting process, Welker pointed out that extended vote counting is normal in California. Trump responded by asking, “Do you know why they’re doing that? Because they’re cheating on the election.”
Welker then asked whether he had evidence to support that claim. Trump replied that “all I have to do is look” and “I listen to people.” When Welker pressed him again for proof, the president questioned whether votes should still be counted several days after Election Day.
The exchange soon grew sharper. Trump accused California officials of being dishonest before turning his criticism toward the media.
“They’re crooked just like you’re crooked, your press is crooked and Meet the Press is crooked,” Trump told Welker.
She rejected the accusation and continued questioning the president. Trump then said her questions were playing into “their hands.”
As the back-and-forth continued, Welker urged the president to stay with the interview. Trump responded by calling her “either stupid or crooked.” He also criticised several major news organisations, including ABC, CBS and CNN.
Moments later, Trump appeared ready to end the conversation. In footage aired by NBC, he can be seen removing his microphone as he stood up.
“Sorry. Let’s call it quits because I’ve had enough,” Trump said. “Thank you, darling. Have a good time.”
Welker reminded him that she had travelled to Wisconsin for the interview, noting that Meet the Press is usually filmed in Washington. Trump replied that “I sat in the rain with you for an hour.”
As Welker attempted to continue the discussion, Trump added that he had spent enough time speaking with her, saying he sat “on and off in the rain, and I’ve given you enough time. You ought to straighten out your press.”
The interview ended shortly afterwards. Back in the studio, Welker told viewers that she and Trump had discussed the weather challenges before the interview and noted that the president had agreed to speak with her again in the future.
