THE ASUU, Northwest University Kano (NWU) Branch has called on Kano State Government and relevant stakeholders to immediately domesticate the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement relating to staff allowances.
The union made the call in a statement jointly signed by the branch Chairperson, Mansur Sa’id, and Secretary, Yusuf Ahmed-Gwarzo, issued to newsmen on Monday in Kano.
ASUU-NWU expressed concern over what it described as the continued delay in implementing the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance (CATA) and the Secretariat Assistance Allowance (SAA) approved for university staff under the 2025 ASUU-FGN agreement.
“The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), NWU Branch, urge the Kano State Government and relevant stakeholders to immediately domesticate and implement the provisions of the 2025 ASUU-Federal Government agreement relating to staff allowances,” it pleaded.
According to the union, its congress held on June 3 reviewed developments on the implementation of the allowances and noted with concern that no significant progress had been made, in spite of expectations that implementation would commence in January.
The union said it had sent several correspondences to the university administration and the Kano state government on the matter without achieving the desired outcome.
It stressed that the welfare of university staff remained central to the stability, productivity, and growth of the university system.
“Delay in implementing approved entitlements unnecessarily create hardship for staff and lead to the accumulation of arrears that could have been avoided through timely action,” the statement said.
The union therefore urged the Kano state government and other relevant stakeholders to expedite action toward the immediate implementation of CATA and SAA.
It maintained that honouring commitments made to university workers was essential for sustaining industrial harmony and promoting excellence in the higher education sector.
The branch also acknowledged the efforts of stakeholders who had continued to engage with the government on issues affecting staff welfare and urged them to intensify such engagements to secure a speedy resolution.
ASUU-NWU reaffirmed its commitment to constructive engagement and dialogue, expressing optimism that the necessary action would be taken without further delay in the interest of staff, students, and the university community.
“Prompt implementation of the allowances will help strengthen industrial harmony and enhance the overall development of the state’s higher education sector,” the statement added. (NAN)
