Democracy Day 2026: FG Seeks Greater Unity, Responsible Citizenship
The Federal Government has called on Nigerians to embrace greater unity, responsible citizenship, and collective participation in nation-building as the country marked the 27th Democracy Day celebration on June 12, 2026.
In a statement marking the occasion, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, said Nigerians joined in prayers for the nation during a solemn Juma’at service held as part of the Democracy Day activities.
He noted that the commemoration serves as a reminder that Nigeria’s progress, unity, and stability depend not only on good governance but also on the active involvement, prayers, and support of citizens.
Idris said Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of Nigeria’s democratic heroes, particularly Chief Moshood Kashimawo Olawale (MKO) Abiola, whose courage, resilience, and commitment to the will of the people remain enduring symbols of the country’s democratic journey.
He added that the day also highlights the strength of Nigeria’s democratic institutions and the collective resolve of citizens to uphold constitutional governance.
According to him, 27 years of uninterrupted democratic rule reflect the resilience of Nigeria’s democracy and the determination of its people to sustain democratic values despite challenges.
The Minister said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, remains committed to strengthening democratic governance, promoting national unity, and addressing the country’s socio-economic and security challenges.
He urged Nigerians to use the occasion to renew their commitment to unity, peaceful coexistence, and responsible citizenship, stressing that the nation’s strength lies in its diversity.
“Nigeria’s strength lies in our diversity, and our future depends on our ability to work together in the interest of our nation. Let us continue to reject division, embrace dialogue, and promote values that strengthen our democracy and foster national cohesion,” he said.
Idris further called on citizens to remain steadfast in supporting efforts aimed at building a stronger, more prosperous, and united Nigeria for present and future generations.
He prayed for continued peace, unity, and prosperity in the country, asking for divine guidance for leaders and protection for security personnel across the nation.
