Tragedy struck the Federal University of Petroleum Resources, Effurun (FUPRE), on Tuesday evening when a 100-level student was allegedly stabbed to death by his elder brother, identified as Joshua.
As gathered, the incident occurred at Hostel C on campus around 6 p.m. following a prolonged disagreement, which had previously led to their separation.
Sources said the pair had agreed to meet behind the hostel to resolve their differences, but the meeting turned violent, resulting in the younger brother being stabbed multiple times.
It was learnt that the young man, who was found behind his hostel with multiple knife wounds by students, allegedly identified his brother, also a student of the institution, as the attacker, before his death.
Images circulating on social media showed the victim lying in a pool of blood while students attempted to assist him.
Reacting to the incident on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor of the university, Professor Ezekiel Agbalagba, described the development as tragic.
“It was a misunderstanding between two brothers of the same mother and father. We are trying to get the young man who committed this heinous act and hand him over to the police. As of now, we are still looking for him,” he said.
Agbalagba assured parents and students that the situation was under control, adding that the campus remained calm and that the university was working closely with security agencies to apprehend the suspect.
