A Magistrate Court sitting in Ejigbo, Lagos, has remanded a man in custody following his arraignment over the alleged attack of an 18-year-old girl, a case that drew widespread condemnation after a video of the incident went viral.
The suspect, who had initially been detained at the Isolo Police Division, was arraigned before Magistrate A.K. Dosunmu-Uthman of the Ejigbo Magistrate Court on criminal assault charges before being remanded in custody.
Meanwhile, authorities confirmed that the survivor has been placed under protective care and is receiving psychosocial support as investigations and prosecution continue.
The development was disclosed on Wednesday by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA), which said it activated its response mechanism immediately after being alerted to the viral video on June 22, 2026.
According to the agency, urgent steps were taken to secure the survivor’s safety and provide her with the support services required to aid her recovery.
As part of these efforts, she was moved into protective custody and enrolled in psychosocial intervention programmes designed to support her emotional and psychological wellbeing.
The agency added that it had established contact with the survivor’s family members as part of a broader strategy to ensure her safety, protection and long-term welfare.
DSVA stressed that the survivor’s wellbeing remains its foremost priority as it continues to work closely with relevant stakeholders to ensure justice is served and appropriate support is provided throughout the legal process.
The agency also addressed reports circulating on social media suggesting that the suspect was married to the survivor, describing the claims as false and without legal basis.
According to preliminary findings, the purported marriage being referenced in connection with the incident is not recognised under Nigerian law.
DSVA expressed appreciation to partner organisations, concerned citizens and other stakeholders whose swift intervention and cooperation contributed to the rescue and protection of the survivor.
The agency noted that the incident underscores the importance of public vigilance and collective action in addressing Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), stressing that protecting vulnerable persons requires sustained collaboration among government institutions, civil society organisations and members of the public.
Reaffirming its zero-tolerance stance against all forms of abuse, the Lagos State Government pledged continued support for survivors and assured residents that perpetrators would be held accountable through the appropriate legal channels.
