THE Civil Liberties Organisation, CLO, Anambra State Branch, has condemned in the strongest terms the barbaric, inhuman, and devilish abuse, torture and brutalisation of Chinecherem by his guardian.
According to the CLO, the incident exposes a dangerous and growing culture of impunity against vulnerable children in our society.
It noted that such violence is rampant in Anambra state, yet it remains largely unreported.
“It is very pathetic, unfortunate, and despicable that neighbours, relatives and community members who live with or witness such ugly acts of cruelty maintain their silence while an innocent child bleeds,” the statement signed by Vincent Ezekwueme, Chairman and Chidi Mbah, Secretary, said.
The statement noted that “Evil does not triumph because of the strength of the wicked. Evil triumphs because good people choose comfort over courage, and convenience over conscience.”
The CLO has therefore appealed to all citizens to rise and help eradicate these disheartening and monumental injustices: exploitations, child abuse, intimidation, brutality, savagery, and man’s inhumanity to man in Anambra State and Nigeria at large.
It urged citizens to always do the following:
“See Something, Say Something Report every case of child abuse, domestic violence and human rights violations immediately.
*Report to Authorities*: Contact the Nigeria Police Force, Gender & Child Protection Unit; Anambra State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs; National Human Rights Commission; or any credible civil society organisation.
*Protect Whistleblowers*: Do not intimidate those who speak up. They are saving lives.
“Your phone call, your text message, your visit to the nearest Police station can be the difference between life and death for a child like Chinecherem.”
The group therefore commends the patriotic and compassionate Nigerians who exposed this impunity, adding that without their courage, this atrocity would have been swept under the carpet.

The group also expressed profound gratitude to Lyda Ikpeazu and Mimi Azikiwe for their patriotic, humanitarian, and sacrificial assistance to an mother, Ujunwa Chinecherem, “who delivered a bouncing baby at Pieta Hospital, Awada, but could not pay her hospital bills”.
The CLO, however, stated that though the donors requested anonymity, but the beneficiary insisted that their kindness should be reciprocated with public commendation.
“Ujunwa is yet to complete her hospital bill and remains under care. We pray that God in His infinite mercy will replenish these benefactors a hundredfold and grant them the deepest desires of their hearts,” the statement said.
The CLO has therefore urged the Nigeria Police Force and the Anambra State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs to prosecute the perpetrator in accordance with the Child Rights Act and Violence Against Persons Prohibition Act, while Schools, Churches and Communities should intensify sensitization on child protection and establish reporting mechanisms.
The CLO also appealed to the government to strengthen the child protection units and shelters for abused children, insisting that “No child should be tortured in the name of discipline or guardianship. Anambra must be a safe home for every child.”
The group convludes that Chinecherem’s case is a wake-up call and that “we cannot build a prosperous homeland on the broken bodies of our children.”
“Let this be the last time we read about a child brutalised, while the community watched in silence. Let us break the culture of silence. Let us break the chain of impunity. Let us save the next child,” the CLO added.
