Nigerian Army troops have thwarted a planned terrorist attack and recovered weapons as well as other operational items during a successful security operation in Zamfara State.
Items recovered during the operation included a PKT machine gun, several rounds of ammunition, two motorcycles and other materials believed to have supported terrorist activities.
Soldiers also discovered chains suspected to have been intended for use on kidnap victims, raising concerns that the planned attack may have involved abductions.
Furthermore, troops recovered eight sets of military uniforms with the army stating that the uniforms may have been intended for use by the terrorists to disguise themselves as security personnel, deceive residents and evade detection during operations.
The operation was conducted yesterday evening by troops of the 8 Division Garrison under Sector 2 of Operation FANSAN YAMMA after intelligence reports indicated that the terrorists were moving toward a community in the Shinkafi axis of Zamfara State.
According to a military source on Wednesday, soldiers strategically positioned themselves along the route believed to be used by the terrorists.
Upon the arrival of the terrorists, troops launched a surprise engagement that sparked a gun battle and forced the attackers to abandon their mission.
“The troops acted with precision based on credible intelligence.
“Their rapid response denied the criminals the opportunity to strike and helped avert what could have been a serious security incident,” the military source said.
Following the encounter, the fleeing terrorists retreated into nearby bushes, allowing troops to take control of the area and conduct a thorough search operation.
“The recovery of military uniforms is particularly significant because it points to an attempt to exploit public trust in security forces. Such tactics pose a serious threat to community safety,” the source added.
Moreover, the source described the success as evidence of the growing effectiveness of intelligence-driven operations against terrorist groups and criminal elements operating across the North-West region.
Meanwhile, troops have since intensified search efforts across surrounding locations to track down the fleeing suspects and prevent them from regrouping for future attacks.
