Troops of Sector 5 under Operation Enduring Peace have successfully rescued a pastor and his wife from suspected kidnappers in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, thwarting the well-coordinated abduction attempt.
The cleric was identified as Ayuba Bitrus and his wife, Nanman Bitrus, who were reportedly attacked by armed men attempting to whisk them away from their residence under the cover of darkness.
On Saturday, it was learnt that the dramatic rescue operation took place yesterday at Faggem Village in the Tarangol District of Bokkos, following a swift military response to a distress call from residents.
As gathered, troops on operational patrol under Sector 5 of Operation Enduring Peace immediately mobilized to the area after receiving intelligence about the ongoing attack.
The prompt intervention of the soldiers reportedly disrupted the operation and forced the gunmen to flee before they could escape with their victims.
According to the sources, the troops’ rapid response prevented what could have become another kidnapping incident in a region that has witnessed recurring security challenges in recent years.
“The troops responded promptly to the report and engaged in efforts that compelled the kidnappers to abandon their mission and escape.
“The victims, who sustained injuries during the incident, were rescued and immediately evacuated to Dung Clinic in Bokkos for medical attention”, they added.
Although details of the injuries sustained by the couple were not immediately available, medical personnel were said to have commenced treatment shortly after they arrived at the health facility.
To prevent further attacks, the troops were reported to have launched a manhunt for the fleeing suspects, combing nearby communities and forests in a bid to apprehend those behind the failed operation.
Residents of Faggem Village reportedly expressed relief following the intervention, describing the swift arrival of troops as crucial in preventing the abduction.
Security sources reaffirmed the commitment of Operation Enduring Peace to protecting lives and property across the state, stressing that efforts to neutralize criminal elements and restore lasting peace would remain a top priority.
The sources also urged members of the public to continue supporting security agencies with credible and timely information capable of preventing attacks and aiding ongoing operations.
As security forces intensify efforts to track down the fleeing suspects, residents have been advised to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious movements within their communities.
