Troops of the Nigerian Army have arrested five illegal miners and recovered explosives as well as other mining equipment during a security operation targeting unauthorised mining activities in Nasarawa State.
A military source said that the suspects were apprehended while carrying out unauthorised mineral extraction at a site under surveillance by security operatives, adding that the arrestees are currently in military custody pending further investigation.
The respondent disclosed that items recovered from the alleged lawbreakers during the enforcement carried out the Tattara community in Karu local government include explosive devices, detonators, a detonating cord, a pumping machine, a generator and three motorcycles.
Moreover, the source noted that the recovery of explosives raised concerns over the potential security risks associated with illegal mining operations, stressing that efforts to dismantle such activities remain ongoing.
He explained that the crackdown forms part of broader efforts by security agencies to curb illegal mining, which authorities believe poses environmental, economic and security threats to affected communities and the country.
“Investigations are ongoing, while the suspects are expected to be handed over to the appropriate authorities for further action upon the conclusion of preliminary inquiries,” the source added.
