Two members of the House of Representatives have defected from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and the Peoples Redemption Party (PRP), signalling renewed political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The lawmakers are Abubakar Zango, representing Yola North/Yola South/Girei Federal Constituency of Adamawa State, and Rabilu Bala, representing Jama’are/Itas-Gadau Federal Constituency of Bauchi State.
In separate letters submitted to the House on Wednesday, Zango indicated that he had moved to the ADC, while Bala announced his defection to the PRP.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Tajudeen Abbas, announced Bala’s defection on the floor of the chamber after reading his letter in which the lawmaker cited persistent internal disagreements within the APC and a desire to align with a platform better positioned to serve his constituents’ interests.
In his correspondence, Bala said his decision followed extensive consultations with stakeholders in his constituency, as well as concerns over developments within the party at both state and national levels.
Zango, in a similar communication, said his decision was driven by the need to better advance the welfare and representation of his constituents.
The defections come amid heightened political consultations and coalition discussions across party lines, reflecting ongoing realignments as the country moves closer to the next general election cycle.
