A Magistrate Court sitting in Bolade, Oshodi, has sentenced 13 residents to three months’ imprisonment each after they pleaded guilty to indiscriminate waste disposal, underscoring the Lagos State Government’s renewed enforcement of environmental sanitation laws.
The convicted individuals are Jamiu Abdulkareem, Nwosu Martin, Abduljamiu Wasiu, Habeeb Muhammed, Kolawole Elijah, Anum Musa, Adeniyi Jamiu, Taiwo Olaniyi, Ali Muhammed, Paul Yaya, Damilare Adebowale, Ojo Fatai and Abah Musa.
The defendants were arraigned for unlawfully dumping refuse in public spaces, an offence prohibited under the state’s environmental sanitation laws.
During the proceedings, all 13 defendants pleaded guilty to the charges. Following their pleas, the court convicted and sentenced each of them to three months’ imprisonment.
The convictions come amid intensified efforts by the Lagos State Government to improve sanitation standards, tackle environmental degradation and curb practices that contribute to flooding, blocked drainage systems and public health risks.
Reacting to the judgment, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said the convictions demonstrate the government’s commitment to enforcing environmental laws and promoting a cleaner, healthier Lagos.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, Wahab stressed that environmental sanitation is a collective responsibility and warned residents against activities that undermine the state’s cleanliness and sustainability goals.
According to him, the successful prosecution of the offenders sends a clear message that the government will not tolerate indiscriminate waste disposal or other environmental violations that endanger public health and the environment.
He added that enforcement operations would continue across the state and that individuals and businesses found violating environmental regulations would face prosecution in accordance with the law.
The commissioner urged residents to use approved waste collection services and designated disposal channels, while calling on communities to support government efforts to maintain a clean and livable environment.
