Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has approved a ₦50,000 wage award for public sector workers in the state to help cushion the impact of rising living costs.
The announcement was made on Friday during the International Workers’ Day celebration held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena.
The governor was represented at the event by his deputy, Obafemi Hamzat.
According to the governor, the payment will apply for the month of May as part of efforts to support workers facing economic pressures, including fuel price increases and inflation.
Sanwo-Olu praised Lagos workers for their role in sustaining the state’s development, describing them as the backbone of its growth across sectors such as education, healthcare, and public service.
He also acknowledged challenges such as housing and transportation, saying the government is expanding affordable housing schemes and investing in transport infrastructure, including rail systems, to improve mobility and productivity.
The governor added that the state has already completed thousands of housing units under its rent-to-own scheme, which requires a 5% down payment with flexible repayment options.
He further reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to regular engagement with labour unions and sustained payment of pensions to retirees.
Earlier, the Head of Service, Bode Agoro, said a motivated workforce remains essential for effective governance and long-term development.
