GOV. Monday Okpebholo says Edo’s top ranking on the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) accountability index reflects his administration’s commitment to transparency and prudent financial management.
Okpebholo spoke on Tuesday in Benin while receiving ICAN’s national leadership led by its President, Haruna Yahya.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports the delegation also presented ICAN’s incoming president, Hajia Safuratu Seghosime, an indigene of Edo.
The governor expressed delight at hosting the institute and recalled his long-standing admiration for the accounting profession.
He said accounting aligned closely with his ICT background, noting both professions demand precision, discipline, and integrity.
Okpebholo said his administration prioritises competence, transparency, and accountability in managing Edo’s public finances.
He said he retained key financial officers after assuming office because of their proven competence and integrity.
“I believe in keeping people with proven integrity. Your profession does not allow room for misconduct, and that is critical in governance,” he said.
Okpebholo said his government would consider employing more chartered accountants to strengthen the state’s financial systems.
He congratulated Seghosime on her emergence and assured her of Edo Government’s full support.
Earlier, Yahya said the visit aligned with ICAN’s tradition of engaging stakeholders across Nigeria.
He described ICAN as Africa’s leading professional accounting body promoting accountability, accuracy, and integrity.
Yahya commended Edo for maintaining prudent financial management and consistent accountability standards.
“Edo has remained at the top through our independent assessments over the past five years,” he said.
He urged the governor to sustain the momentum and continue supporting accountability initiatives.
Yahya also invited Okpebholo to Seghosime’s June 2 investiture ceremony and ICAN’s annual accountants’ conference.
According to him, the governor is expected to attend as a special guest speaker.
Yahya further urged Edo to employ more chartered accountants for stronger public financial accountability. (NAN)
