Lagos: Lone crash k!lls driver on Oshodi -Apapa expressway
A tragic lone auto crash claimed the life of a driver in the early hours of Friday along the Oshodi-Apapa Expressway at Charity bus stop, inward Iyana Isolo, Lagos.
The victim, whose identity had yet to be officially disclosed as of press time, died instantly after the Honda Pilot Sports Utility Vehicle (SUV) he was driving reportedly lost control and overturned several times before coming to a halt.
According to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), the impact of the crash left the vehicle badly mangled, trapping the driver inside the wreckage.
LASTMA officials, who were on routine traffic monitoring and management duties around the Iyana Isolo axis when the accident occurred, responded immediately to the emergency.
Working alongside officers from the Mosafejo Police Division, the traffic management personnel conducted a rescue and recovery operation, successfully extricating the deceased from the twisted remains of the vehicle while ensuring free flow of traffic and preventing secondary accidents on the busy corridor.
Following the operation, officials of the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) evacuated the corpse to a public mortuary in line with public health and statutory procedures.
The wrecked vehicle was subsequently handed over to officers of the Mosafejo Police Division, who have commenced investigations into the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.
Reacting to the incident, the General Manager of LASTMA, Mr. Olalekan Bakare-Oki, expressed deep sadness over the loss of life and extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
Bakare-Oki urged motorists across the state to exercise caution on the roads, particularly during late-night and early-morning journeys when visibility and alertness may be reduced.
He warned drivers against reckless driving, excessive speeding, dangerous overtaking and other traffic violations that could lead to avoidable road tragedies.
According to him, “Motorists are strongly urged to eschew reckless driving, dangerous overtaking, excessive speeding and every form of traffic infraction capable of precipitating avoidable tragedies on our roads. The sanctity and preservation of human life must remain paramount in the conduct of every road user.”
The LASTMA boss stressed that no journey should be considered so urgent as to justify compromising safety, reiterating the agency’s commitment to ensuring safer roads across Lagos state.
The incident adds to growing concerns over road safety on major highways in Lagos, where authorities continue to campaign against speeding and other dangerous driving habits that often result in fatal accidents.
