Imo: Highway, streets deserted as residents observe Biafran Day

Imo residents, Saturday, deserted all roads and streets of the state, especially, those of the state capital, Owerri, while observing the Biafran day.

Reports had it that the day, May 30 every year was set aside by Biafran agitators to remember and honour those who fought on the side of Biafra during the 1967-70 Nigeria-Biafra Civil War.

It was an unexpected experience as residents observed the day, irrespective of the fact that the Monday sit-at-home which was being observed every week has since been forgotten.

Blueprint.ng correspondent who moved round Owerri, the state capital on foot, gathered that 98% of vehicles, both private and commercial, which used to ply the roads on regular days, were nowhere to be found. 

Even pedestrians deserted the streets as though there was a government imposed curfew, Blueprint.ng reports.

Also, private shops, business centres, eatries, communication outfits, markets etc were under lock and key, thus making it difficult for those who tried to come out to access their needs.
