The Edo State National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) orientation camp in Okada has partnered with Florish Foundation for Women and Youths to train prospective corps members on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The three-day programme, which concluded on Wednesday, began with 120 participants drawn from over 1,900 corps members on camp. By the end of the training, 75 volunteers were graduated as SDGs ambassadors and Development Knowledge Facilitators (DKFs), committed to advancing the 17 global goals across their host communities during and after service.
Speaking on behalf of the state NYSC coordinator, Fashina Adedotun, camp director Mr Hakeem Adewuyi urged corps members to apply the knowledge gained, describing the SDGs as vital to national development. He noted that a similar initiative in January produced over 75 SDGs volunteers, adding that the camp intends to sustain the trend.
Florish Foundation representative, Chinwendu Augusta Nwachukwu, alongside SDGs schedule officer Mr Cosmas, led sensitisation sessions for 1,961 corps members. Key insights on the 17 goals were shared to foster awareness and inspire active participation in sustainable development.
Service innovation officer Mr Waheed Ozeto advised the newly inducted facilitators to extend the training into the wider society. The graduation ceremony marked a significant step toward building capacity for the UN’s Decade of Action (2020–2030), with volunteers expected to engage government, private sector, NGOs, and individuals in embedding the SDGs.
