Sokoto Police Engage Igbo, Yoruba Groups, PCRC to Strengthen Community Policing
In line with the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, to deepen community policing nationwide, the Commissioner of Police, Sokoto State Command, CP Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, has hosted key community groups in separate engagements aimed at strengthening security collaboration across the state.
The meetings, held at the Command Headquarters in Sokoto, brought together leaders of the Apex Igbo Traders Union, the Yoruba Community Council, and the Police Community Relations Committee (PCRC), Zone 10, as part of efforts to build trust, enhance intelligence sharing, and reinforce the state’s security architecture.
The Commissioner received the delegations led by Mr. Chigoze Chiko Chema, Chairman of the Apex Igbo Traders Union; Mr. Adegbome Bolaji Kama, President of the Yoruba Community Council; and Alhaji Mijinyawa Bello, leader of the PCRC Zone 10.
Police Emphasise Shared Responsibility
During the engagements, CP Shaffa highlighted the critical role of community partnerships in crime prevention and detection, urging the groups to serve as reliable channels for gathering and sharing actionable intelligence.
He reassured them of the Command’s commitment to protecting all law-abiding residents, irrespective of ethnic or professional affiliations.
“The IGP’s vision is clear—policing must be a shared responsibility. These engagements reflect our collective resolve to build a safer Sokoto through dialogue, trust, and timely information sharing,” he said.
Community Leaders Pledge Support
Leaders of the respective groups commended the Command’s open-door policy and pledged full cooperation in supporting security operations.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to mobilising their members towards promoting peace and providing credible information to security agencies.

The Command reiterated its call on residents to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities through designated emergency lines.

The development was contained in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer of the Sokoto State Command, DSP Ahmad Rufa’i, who noted that the initiative forms part of sustained efforts to bridge the gap between the police and the public.
The Command added that strengthening community engagement remains central to achieving a more responsive and intelligence-driven policing system in the state.
