The Rivers State Authorities has directed orphanage operators and childcare suppliers to register and adjust to legal guidelines defending youngsters’s rights throughout the state.
The directive was issued by Lauretta Dimpka, Everlasting Secretary of the Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation, throughout a stakeholders’ assembly in Port Harcourt.
The transfer follows public outrage over plans by Chibuzor Chinyere of Omega Energy Ministries to rearrange a wedding for his 21-year-old autistic adopted daughter, with incentives provided to suitors.
Dimpka mentioned the federal government intervened after the problem went viral, noting that though the intention could have been good, it violated current legal guidelines.
“As a faith-based organisation, the interventions appeared well-meaning however fell in need of compliance with the legislation,” she mentioned.
She cited the Baby’s Rights Act, Individuals with Disabilities Act, and Violence In opposition to Individuals (Prohibition) Act as key protections.
“These legal guidelines mandate strict safeguards for minors and individuals with particular wants,” she added.
She urged compliance, stating, “All orphanages and youngsters’s properties working within the state should be duly registered to make sure adherence to little one safety protocols.”
