Forest guard, Zakari Usman, allegedly working for terrorists, is under interrogation by the Nigerian Army in Kwara State, AljazirahNigeria reports.
The arrest of the suspect by the army in Kaiama Local Government Area, followed a letter that had been in circulation about two weeks ago.
The letter indicated that terrorists wrote the people of Venra community, few kilometres to Kaiama, that they planned to attack the area.
Security sources said there were serious concerns in Kaiama and other communities in Kwara North about members of the Nigeria Forests Security Services, otherwise known as Forest Guards, particularly those recruited from the villages, that they are sabotaging the efforts of the military by divulging information to terrorists, leading to recent bloody attacks on some communities.
Reports indicated that the letter, written in Hausa language, specifically listed the people they intended to attack in Venra community, but no date was stated for the attack.
The army in a joint operation with forest guards reportedly arrested Usman through intelligence-driven information.
It was gathered that the forest guards working for the terrorists were being handsomely rewarded, raising concerns for the community and government.
During interrogations, Usman reportedly said it was because those who gave him money for business transactions that he could not deliver had been tormenting him, hence he resorted to working for terrorists for bailout.
He also said the letter was written to create panic in the community in a bid to extort the people and secure the debts being owed.
Efforts to reach the Acting Information Officer, Operation Savannah Shield, Captain J. Yaya, at the time of this report were unsuccessful.
