FG Declares Friday Public Holiday to Celebrate Workers’ Day

The Federal Government has declared Friday, May 1, 2026, a public holiday in commemoration of this year’s International Workers’ Day.

The announcement was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, on behalf of the government, according to a statement issued on April 29, 2026.

The minister congratulated Nigerian workers on the occasion and commended their continued contributions to national development, describing their efforts as vital to the country’s growth and prosperity.

He urged workers across various sectors to sustain values such as patriotism, diligence and productivity, noting that these remain critical to achieving sustainable development goals.

Reaffirming government commitment, Tunji-Ojo stated that the administration would continue to prioritise the welfare and security of workers while creating an enabling environment for economic expansion.

He also called on Nigerians to remain peaceful and law-abiding during the celebration, encouraging citizens to use the period to reflect on the importance of unity, discipline and hard work in nation-building.

The statement was signed by the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Magdalene Ajani.
