Broad-daylight killing sparks outrage as Delta Police detain officer over viral execution video
The Delta State Police Command has detained a police officer and launched an investigation following the circulation of a viral video allegedly showing the broad-daylight killing of a restrained suspect identified as upcoming music artist, Godspower Ofor, popularly known as “OG Million.”
The disturbing footage, which surfaced on social media on Monday, triggered widespread outrage across Delta State and beyond, with many Nigerians accusing security operatives of carrying out an extrajudicial execution.
In the video, the victim was seen with his hands and legs tied while pleading for his life. He repeatedly appealed to the armed men around him, identifying them as police officers and offering to cooperate with authorities.
“I will tell you where they are,” the victim was heard shouting moments before gunshots rang out at close range.
The footage later showed the victim’s body being loaded into a police-branded Toyota Sienna vehicle allegedly occupied by members of a tactical police team.
The Delta State Police Command, through its spokesperson, SP Bright Edafe, confirmed that an officer linked to the incident had been taken into custody pending investigation.
Police authorities identified the officer as Inspector Usman Nuhu, while sources within the command disclosed that other members of the tactical team seen in the Sienna vehicle have also been placed under internal review as investigators attempt to determine the exact sequence of events and identify everyone present during the operation.
Commissioner of Police, CP Abaniwonda Olufemi, reportedly ordered the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to immediately commence a full-scale investigation into the incident.
“The Command condemns any form of extrajudicial killing or abuse of power. The officer involved has been detained, and investigations are ongoing,” the police statement said.
The incident has intensified public anger following allegations from family members and local residents that the deceased may have been set up through a courier package popularly referred to as a “waybill.”
According to accounts from relatives and community members, OG Million had allegedly gone to retrieve a package when he was intercepted by armed operatives. They claimed the package reportedly contained a firearm unknown to him.
Witnesses alleged that despite insisting he had no knowledge of the weapon, the artist was restrained and later shot in public view.
The killing has since sparked protests in parts of Effurun and Asaba, with youth groups and human rights advocates demanding justice for the slain artist.
The hashtag #JusticeForOGMillion continued trending online on Tuesday as activists called for the prosecution of all officers involved in the operation.
Several civil society organizations also described the incident as a serious violation of the Nigeria Police Act and constitutional provisions guaranteeing the right to life and fair hearing.
Meanwhile, the Delta State Government has appealed for calm, assuring residents that the matter will be thoroughly investigated and that anyone found culpable would face prosecution.
A candlelight procession in honour of the late artist is expected to hold in Effurun later this week as tensions remain high across the community.
