Arsenal F.C. manager Mikel Arteta has said he expects a difficult and highly competitive encounter when his side faces Atlético Madrid in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League semi-final on Wednesday night.
The Gunners head into the crucial European fixture on the back of a narrow 1-0 victory over Newcastle United F.C. in the Premier League last weekend, a result that boosted morale ahead of the continental showdown.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday, Arteta acknowledged Atletico’s pedigree and experience in Europe’s elite competition.
“A really tough match,” the Spaniard said. “They are a team that has so much experience in the competition, that have every right to be here, because what they have done is remarkable.”
Despite the challenge, Arteta expressed confidence in Arsenal’s ability to rise to the occasion, pointing to their consistent performances in Europe this season.

“We know the difficulty of the match, but I think we have shown in Europe, in any ground, what we are capable of,” he stated.

“We have been very consistent, and tomorrow we have to play with that confidence, with that desire and that will, to come here to win the game,” Arteta added.
